An all-day celebration commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Rebellion took place on Belle Isle in Detroit on Friday, June28. The event, attended by more than 175 people, was organized under the slogans “Pride for Queers and Workers, not Banks and Bosses! Queer Liberation, not Gay Assimilation!” by the Take Back Pride Initiative which stated:
We will be commemorating the radical revolutionary birth of the Queer Power movement, which today has often become co-opted and defanged into corporatized Pride parades and festivals filled with banks and heavy police control. We radical queers maintain that the struggle for liberation has only just begun.
As our hard-fought rights are stolen from us by increasingly vile government action, the fight must go on, and until the shackles of Homophobia, transphobia, patriarchy and the capitalist system they support are destroyed, we will only have the rights our oppressors say we do. The struggles and suffering of our Queer ancestors will not be forgotten, and so we fight on!
