The Communist Workers League condemns the Trump regime’s assassination of Iranian General Qassim Soleimani, commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards and one of the top  officials in Iran, by a drone strike at the Baghdad Airport on Jan. 3.

This blatant act violates both U.S. and international law against the assassination of foreign leaders, and marks a sharp escalation in the continuing campaign of economic and now military warfare against the government of Iran, with the goal of regime change to put in place a more pliable regime in Iran more pleasing to the giant oil companies on Wall Street and U.S. imperialism as a whole.

Although some Democratic candidates and Senator Paul condemned the attack as “reckless” and “without a plan”, politicians from both bourgeois parties chimed in agreement that General Soleimani had been responsible for the death of “hundreds of American soldiers in Iraq”. This brazen hypocrisy comes from the same “war hawks” who launched the 2003 invasion and nearly decade-long occupation of Iraq on the lie that the Saddam Hussein government secretly stored stockpiles of so-called “Weapons of Mass Destruction”. The Iraq war cost up to a million civilians their lives, with many more forced to flee the country as refugees. It also caused the deaths of more than 4,400 U.S. soldiers, with more than 31,000 wounded.

These well-heeled financial wizards and businessmen care nothing about the lives of U.S. soldiers or Iraqis, but only about their control of Iraqi and Middle East’s vast oceans of oil, which they consider their private property.

The murder of General Soleimani will certainly spark massive anger and hatred against the U.S., endangering the workers and oppressed both at home and abroad. No doubt Trump’s brazen act was designed to shore up his Wall Street support in the face of his upcoming impeachment trial.

Progressive forces must mobilize immediately against these war moves that endanger the lives and livelihoods of millions of people both here and overseas. We need good paying jobs, free health care and education, the end of racist attacks on migrants and their children and the end to police shootings and jailing of Black and Latinex youth, the stopping of the vast corporate destruction of the planet’s climate and environment, and so much more.

What we don’t need is more war that only serves to further enrich the billionaire class that lords over us.

Stop the War Drive against Iran!

U.S. out of the Middle East!

No more war spending! Federal funds for human needs, not war!
