Stop Evictions and Honor the CDC Moratorium!

By Detroit Fighting Words Staff

There was another midday picket line outside 36th District Court in downtown Detroit on Friday, October 9, 2020.

The demonstration called for the halt to eviction proceedings due to the COVID-19 pandemic amid the worsening economic crisis and the dearth of affordable housing in the city.

This action was called by Detroit Eviction Defense (DED) and supported by Moratorium NOW! Coalition, Detroit Action, Detroit Renter City, and other organizations.

A letter was delivered to Chief Judge William McConico demanding the Court uphold the Center for Disease and Prevention (CDC) order issued last month aimed at preventing an even deeper social crisis stemming from putting millions of people out of their homes and apartments.

The judge came downstairs from his office and agreed to meet with a delegation of three representatives of the people at the protest the following week.

Results of the meeting will be made available in future coverage of this developing story which has national implications.
