Detroit suburbs exposed for racism

A press conference was held on Friday November 6, 2020 to announce the beginning of a billboard campaign protesting the long documented problems facing African Americans on the border between the city of Detroit and its northern suburbs.

The project was initiated by a number of organizations including the Moratorium NOW! Coalition.

Speakers at the press conference included representatives from Detroit Will Breathe, Michigan Liberation, Central United Methodist Church as well as Moratorium NOW! Coalition. The press conference was emceed by Sarah Torres.

Fundraising efforts are continuing to purchase more billboard space in the area.

A similar effort in Livonia inspired the most recent campaign resulting in the billboard on 8 Mile Road and Wyoming bordering Royal Oak Township, Detroit, Oak Park, Ferndale and other suburbs. Victims of racial profiling (“driving while Black) are being urged to call in with the details of their experiences so that a campaign.
