This text came at 1:53 on Friday, August 16, from Jewish Voice for Peace: “Join us tonight for Shabbat in the Park with Rashida”. By 5:30 the crowds began to gather in Detroit’s Pallister Park. We all wanted the world to know that there are many Jews in the U.S. who reject and deplore Trump’s racist behavior and actions and do not support Israel’s turning Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib away as both a Palestinian and in her duly elected role as our representative. Rashida was both eloquent and genuine. She stated, “I cannot tell you how much love I feel here…I’m proud of my Palestinian roots, and I’m also strong because I grew up in the most beautiful, Blackest city in the country, in the city of Detroit.”
This Shabbat rally attracted local news coverage from the Voice of Detroit.
There are thousands of Jews who support Congresswomen Rashida Tliab and Ilan Omar for what they have said and how they have spoken truth to power. Supporting the Boycott Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement is what helped bring South Africa to its knees. The apartheid state of Israel needs to be stopped. The U.S. backed attacks on the Palestinian people since 1948 are unconscionable and criminal. Rashida Tliab and Ilan Omar have provided the Palestinian struggle for self-determination and the right of return a voice, for the first time, from within the halls of the U.S. Congress. Hopefully we can stop this criminal unjust behavior by the state of Israel and the U.S. imperialist support that it gets. Criticizing Israel is not anti-Semitic. We are unflinchingly in support of Palestine and denounce the racist Zionist government of Israel.
