On Wednesday, July 24, 2024, there was a demonstration and speakout in opposition to the visit of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the United States.
The action took place on the same day as Netanyahu addressed a joint session of the U.S. Congress in Washington, D.C.
Netanyahu’s visit to the nation’s capital prompted mass protests. The day before, hundreds of Jewish Americans staged a sit-in at the Capitol Building saying, “No Genocide in Our Name.”
The following day, thousands gathered outside the same building calling for the arrest of Netanyahu for crimes against humanity and genocide.
Dozens of Congressional and Senatorial leaders, including Vice President Kamala Harris, boycotted the address by Netanyahu.
Detroit Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib attended the speech holding a sign saying, “You are Guilty of Genocide.”
Since October 7, the Palestinian solidarity movement has grown by leaps and bounds.
In Detroit, activists from Moratorium NOW! Coalition, the UAW, religious leaders and youth stood in solidarity with the demonstrations at Capitol Hill as well as expressing support for the Palestinian people in Gaza where the government in Tel Aviv has killed nearly 40,000 people in a genocidal onslaught in Gaza and other areas of the occupied territories.
