On Friday, November 28, 2025 the Moratorium NOW! Coalition held a demonstration outside the Federal Building.in downtown Detroit to demand that the Trump administration fully fund and enhance benefits for SNAP and the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare). The recent government shutdown and reopening have not resolved the escalating crisis facing tens of millions of poor and working people in the United States.

News reports indicate that even though the federal government shutdown has ended, the demand for food is only escalating. Thousands are lining up daily to receive food from pantries and other sources in the city of Detroit.

The media is spinning the story to make it appear as if these are positive developments highlighting the philanthropic atmosphere in the Metropolitan area. Nonetheless, the question must be asked: why are there tens of thousands of people unable to select and purchase the food they need and desire?

Another looming crisis for the new year will be the threats to gut the ACA which provides healthcare coverage for tens of millions in the U.S. If these subsidies for the ACA are not funded it will be disastrous for many of our neighbors, relatives, co-workers, including children, adults, people living with disabilities, seniors, etc.

We must raise these critical issues within the resistance movement against Trump while continuing to pressure the administration to redirect the trillions-dollar tax cuts and war expenditures to funding programs to provide food, healthcare and housing for the majority of people living in the country.
