Poems by renowned Black leader and activist Julia Wright

ALEIDA GUEVARA’S TEARS ARE WATER TO THE FLOWERS OF OUR RESOLVE

to Aleida Guevara, daughter of Che Guevara, mother and pediatrician

your tears
unlock ours
as rage
makes the sleepless eye
run dry

your tears
become
the ocean
that unites us
from stolen shore
to stolen shore

your tears
are the water
to flower
our long-haul Resolve

your song
learned
on your father’s knee
takes us back
but also forward

your reaching out
to the freedom fighters
of Palestine
Lebanon
and Iran
rooting them
in Che’s loving call
for
No Concession
grounds us
all

How does it feel to be missing, Bibi?

the King is in his counting house
counting all his money …

old nursery rhyme

how does it feel
to be missing,
Bibi?

how does it feel?

i don’t know why i ask
because
your human feelings
are awol

are you in
your bunkered counting house,
Bibi,
counting your last drones
and
wondering how to patch up
your Iron Dome?

how does it feel,
Bibi,
to be
on freedom’s borrowed time?

how does it feel
to be replaced
by a six-fingered AI
stand-in?

how does it feel
to be in free fall,
Bibi,
spiraling
down the dark abyss,
your wings melted
by your own nuclear hubris

how does it feel,
Bibi,
to be unable
to feel?

TO MOTHER EARTH ON WORLD WATER DAY

what is there to celebrate
today
on World Water Day?

what is there to celebrate
when those in Gaza
who have not been thermobarically
evaporated
drink from
ash and blood
muddied waters?

what is there to celebrate
today
when the AI precision bombs
sent by
the axis of Evil allies
destroy
desalination plants
in Iran?

what is there to celebrate?

what is there to celebrate
when babies
dying from malnutrition
cannot afford to cry
because
their tears
are their last inner source
of water?

what is there to celebrate?

what is there to celebrate
when our War Department
weaponizes
the power of hurricanes
and attempts to manipulate the sun
as part of their aggression
against
the peoples’ right to water?

what is there to celebrate,
i ask Mother Earth

and Mother Earth
with all the patience
in the world
responds:

i stand strong
i hold you tight
in my earthy womb
where you swim
in the birth waters
of my unbreaking Love

THEY WOULD GRIND OUR BOOKS TO MAKE THEIR BREAD

fi fi fo fum
i smell the blood of a librarian
i will grind his books
to make my bread …

to Bisan

Bisan asks:
do you know what happens
to librairies
when Israel attacks?

there comes to the numbed mind
the same ole footage
of rubble –
concrete
metal
plaster
and bricks and bricks
of rubble
but no
this is not what Bisan sees

she shows us
entire floors
of fallen
open
torn
shredded
dismembered
books
their pages
and
their sodden covers
feeding the earth
that grew their tree

she shows us
what Israel really fears –
the perennial power
of archived words
of words as weapons
and
the ancestrally rooted love
of literacy
