Solidarity with Zimbabwe

Members and allies of the December 12 Movement in New York City welcomed Zimbabwe’s new president, Emmerson Mnangagwa, with rallies and marches in Harlem on September 22 and outside the United Nations on September 26. Mnangagwa was attending the 73rd Ordinary Session of the U.N. General Assembly.

The marchers demanded an end to U.S. sanctions on Zimbabwe. The sanctions were imposed after the African nation, then led by President Robert Gabriel Mugabe, reclaimed land stolen by European settlers for the Zimbabwean people. The Trump regime strengthened the sanctions on August 14.

Zimbabwe won its freedom from white settler rule in 1980 after a prolonged liberation struggle led by the Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF).
