A vigil and demonstration was held at the McNamara Federal Building in downtown Detroit on Wednesday, December 9, 2020 to oppose and condemn the scheduled executions of four African American men and one white woman by the United States government between Dec.10, (International Human Rights Day), and the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Jan. 15, 2021.
The names of those scheduled to be executed are Brandon Bernard, Alfred Bourgeois, Lisa Montgomery, Cory Johnson and Dustin Higgs.
The imposition of the death penalty in the U.S has been condemned by governments and organizations around the globe. This action was called by the Moratorium NOW! Coalition and supported by Detroit Will Breathe along with other organizations and human rights activists.
