Women and their allies rallied and marched in downtown Detroit on Friday afternoon, June 24, 2022, just hours after the Supreme Court in a 5-4 decision struck down reproductive rights by ruling that there was no constitutional guarantee to abortion in the United States.

Supporters of reproductive freedom gathered beginning at 5:00 PM outside the Federal Court Bldg. which had been sealed off by government police using guardrails.

Many women activists spoke about the need to repeal the ban on abortion which will be enacted swiftly in half the states. According to spokespersons for reproductive justice, the Supreme Court’s 200-plus pages ruling opens the floodgates for further attacks on civil and gender rights.

There were speeches from the Michigan Coalition for Reproductive Liberation, Detroit Will Breathe, Disability Power and other organizations.

A ballot initiative to enshrine reproductive rights into the Michigan constitution was a major focus of petitioners.
