Gaza Blues – a poem

For Eric Garner, George Floyd and so many others – all lynched like Gaza today.
For Henry Hagains who reminded me

in Gaza
the rubble
reluctantly yields
loved ones

there is
no room
to bury the dead

there is nowhere
to head
but the sea
taking the beloved land
by the hand

there is no time
to make up
their minds
so others stay
knowing
the land
is Mama

there is no sense of time
as internet
flickers
and white phosphorus
winds
its slow burning path
down to the bone

the Israeli army
taught
our police
the blood choke
that killed George Floyd
but Gaza is forever safe
because
when space reduces
to the point of inhumane chokehold
time will leap into
a spaceless
borderless
limitless
life gasp
of victory
