Detroit “Strike City” Mobilizes Thousands of Workers in United March for Economic Justice

A mass demonstration for Workers Rights and Economic Justice was held on Thursday,. October 19, 2023 where striking union members from Blue Cross-Blue Shield, the three casinos and the automakers joined together with their supporters to fill the streets of downtownDetroit from the Hollywood Greektown Casino to the Labor Monument in Hart Plaza.

3,700 casino workers went out on strike this week joining over 1,000 UAW Local 2500 members at Blue Cross-Blue Shield who have engaged in a work stoppage since Sept. 13.

Tens of thousands of UAW workers have been involved in an unprecedented “stand up strike” since September 15.

These developments are an integral element within the wave of industrial actions which have swept the United States since the spring.

At present hundreds of thousands of union members are striking in the industrial, services and entertainment industries across the country.

Workers are demanding an end to substandard wages and the lack of benefits while the billionaire class is reaping record profits.
