An Executive Order issued by Donald Trump on April 28, 2025 takes a giant step toward a military takeover of the United States government. The document is titled “Strengthening and unleashing America’s law enforcement to pursue criminals and protect innocent citizens” and is available at WhiteHouse.gov. It should alarm the nation!
Much of the document promotes “a tough and well-equipped police force.” Those sections clearly advocate police violence and rabid racism. Trump condemns “local leaders [who] demonize law enforcement.” He wants to “unleash high-impact local police forces” and promises federal aid to “protect and defend law enforcement officers wrongly accused and abused by State or local officials.”
He condemns all “race- and sex-based ‘equity’ policies.” Local cops convicted of improper behavior will be defended and get “indemnification” from the U.S. Attorney General, including free legal aid. Higher pay and benefits are promised – but with no mention of how this will be paid for.
More prisons are promoted and the Attorney General is directed to “rescind or move to conclude” Federal consent decrees currently in place to curtail out of control local police forces.
The first three sections of the Executive Order are pretty much what any “law and order” right-wing politician would propose. Section 4(b), however, is another matter entirely. It promises that “within 90 days of the date of this order, the Secretary of Defense, in coordination with the Attorney General, shall determine how military and national security assets, training, non-lethal capabilities, and personnel can most effectively be utilized to prevent crime.” This is a clear threat of using troops in the streets – martial law.
Section 5(a) threatens to arrest local officials for “unlawfully prohibiting law enforcement officers from carrying out duties” (meaning those who prevent local cops from cooperating with any of Trump’s unconstitutional orders). Section 5(b) threatens prosecution of state or local officials who promote “’diversity, equity, and inclusion’ initiatives that restrict law enforcement activity.”
Section 6 goes even further. It orders the use of Homeland Security Task Forces (established under January 20, 2025 Executive Order #14159) to “advance the objectives of this order. ICE officers are already going wild in the streets across the country. They are now to be joined by the U.S. Army and Homeland Security gestapo agents beginning by July 27, 2025.
Consider this Executive Order along with the May 9 press briefing by Stephen Miller, White House Deputy Chief of Staff. Miller announced that the White House is “exploring the option of suspending habeas corpus, the constitutional provision that protects from unlawful detainment.” The basis of this suspension is that the Trump administration will declare that the U.S. is under “invasion” from undocumented immigrants. Suspension of habeas corpus would give the executive branch the power to arrest and detain anyone at all, for any length of time, with no recourse to judges’ orders to have those persons brought before them.
Other alarming actions by the Trump gang are the arrest of a Milwaukee judge on April 25. Judge Hannah Dugan is accused of a misdemeanor and a felony for allegedly aiding an undocumented immigrant to evade arrest by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers.
On May 9 Newark’s Mayor Ras Baraka was assaulted and arrested at a newly opened ICE detention center in his city. Baraka was denied entry into the facility along with three New Jersey members of Congress. Two dozen masked government agents with no name tags violently assaulted the Mayor and his supporters who were peacefully gathered in the parking lot. The Trump administration is considering also bringing charges against the Congress members.
Step by step Trump is moving toward a police state. Only a mass mobilization across the country can defeat these sinister developments.
