On September 10 Poland reported that 19 Russian drones had entered its airspace and were shot down by NATO jet fighters stationed in that country. There were no reported casualties. The drones may have crossed the border from neighboring Belarus, a Russian ally.
Russia responded by saying that it would investigate the claim. Newsweek reported on September 11 that “the official government newspaper…headlined ‘Warsaw inflated a scandal over alleged Russian drones.’” It went on to point out that “no strikes on Poland were planned, no explosives in the drones were found and there was no confirmation that the devices were even Russian.”
Polish leaders are whipping up the situation by invoking NATO’s Article 4 which requires all the alliance members “whenever, in the opinion of any of them, the territorial integrity, political independence or security of any of the parties is threatened.” Article 4 discussions could, theoretically, lead to joint NATO military action under Article 5.
Of course, Ukraine’s President Zelensky has long been pushing for direct US/NATO intervention in his war with the Russian Federation. Russia launched its Special Military Operation on February 24, 2022 to prevent Ukraine from joining NATO and having NATO troops and missiles right on its border. Russia also sought to defend ethnic Russians in Ukraine who had been under constant attack by pro-Nazi Ukraine military units since the US sponsored coup of 2014. Poland has also been the main conduit into Ukraine for tens of billions of dollars’ worth of US and European weapons in what can only be understood as a proxy war aimed at regime change in Russia.
What has gotten far less attention in the Western media is the continuing US military support for the proxy war despite some comments by US President Trump about limiting his country’s support for Ukraine. On August 24, 2025 United24 Media reported “Trump Approves 3,350 US Strike Missiles for Ukraine … .according to The Wall Street Journal” The deal is said to be valued at $850 million.
Also included in the deal are “air defense platforms and Guided Multiple Launch Rocket Systems.” A large number of these missiles have not been produced yet and could be spread over several more years.
US imperialism’s goals, even under the Trump regime, are still the same – domination over all political, military and economic entities around the world to insure Wall Street’s continuing mega-profits. This latest incident reflects the serious danger of a wider, world war developing from the Ukraine conflict.
