A resolution entitled Recognizing the Genocide of the Palestinian People in Gaza” has been introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives by Michigan Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib.

In an email,  Rashida Tlaib stated:

The Israeli government’s genocide in Gaza has not ended, and the U.S. continues sending weapons to a genocidal military. This horror will not end until we act.

That’s why I introduced a new resolution in the House of Representatives: “Recognizing the Genocide of the Palestinian People in Gaza.” It already has support from 20 of my colleagues and over 100 organizations.

Agreeing with Palestinians in Gaza, experts have concluded that the two-year slaughter and forced starvation of Palestinians is genocide—from the International Association of Genocide Scholars, to the United Nations Independent International Commission of Inquiry, to human rights groups such as Amnesty International (which endorsed this resolution), Doctors Without Borders, and Israel-based B’Tselem.

If passed, House Resolution 876 would require the United States to follow international law and respect its obligations under the Genocide Convention to prevent and punish the crime of genocide, including:

  • Ending all relevant arms and equipment transfers to Israel
  • Investigating and prosecuting individuals and corporations in the U.S. that are complicit in Israel’s genocide
  • Fully complying with the orders of the International Court of Justice and investigations of the International Criminal Court
  • Implementing required-by-law sanctions on the Israeli officials responsible, as well as individuals and corporations involved in the genocide against the Palestinian people

The email continues:

Anti-Palestinian group AIPAC and its supporters are already building their campaign against us. They’re trying to stop this resolution and cover up the truth.

But our movement is growing larger every day, and support for Palestinians’ human rights is also growing in Congress.

We will keep standing up for the right to live freely. As the only Palestinian American serving in Congress, I’m reminding my colleagues that Palestinians are human beings. And together, we won’t stop demanding the United States follow its legal obligations to prevent and punish genocide.
