Detroit responds to call for Global Climate Strike

These photographs were taken at the Detroit Global Climate Strike rally and march on Fri. Sept. 20, 2019.

The activities began at Grand Circus Park with a rally. The rally opened with a speech by Frank Hammer, a retired General Motors worker, former President and Chairman of UAW Local 909 in Warren, Michigan, a UAW-GM International Representative, who called on the UAW strike against GM to be merged with the Global Climate Strike.  Participants later marched down Woodward avenue to Hart Plaza where another speak out was held featuring youth.

With rising environmental degradation the planet and its people are under constant threat. The Global Climate Strike occurred across the world between Sept 20-27.

On its first day it is estimated by some media outlets that up to 4 million people around the world participated in various forms of demonstrations and protests.  An estimated 7.6 million people participated during week of the Global Climate Strike with actions taking place in Latin America, Africa, Asia, Oceania, and Europe, as well as North America.
