Detroit “Right to Counsel” Coalition Gathers to Celebrate Passage of City Ordinance

Members and supporters of the Right to Counsel Coalition which worked for several years to pass the recent ordinance guaranteeing legal assistance for those facing housing problems, held an outdoor gathering on Sat. June 25, 2022 at the Congress of Communities on the southwest side.

A number of housing advocacy groups attended the event including Moratorium NOW! Coalition, Detroit Action, Wisdom Institute, Detroit Eviction Defense, United Community Housing Coalition, Michigan ACLU, among others.

Atty. Tonya Phillips explained the history of the community-based alliance and next steps related to implementing the ordinance.

Participants enjoyed the literature tables, music, books, food and drinks.

The Right to Counsel Coalition brings together organizations representing the African American and Latin American communities.
