The People’s Organization For Progress (POP) is calling upon the public to rally in support Congresswoman LaMonica McIver during her federal court hearing today.

The rally will take place Wednesday morning, June 25th, 9:30am outside the U.S. Postal Service and courts building at 2 Federal Square, in Newark, NJ 07102. It is being organized by a coalition of social justice organizations.

“We urge everyone to come out and show support for Congresswoman McIver and resist the attempts by President Trump and members of his administration to silence those who oppose their unjust and oppressive policies,” Lawrence Hamm, Chairman, People’s Organization For Progress stated.

“We believe Congresswoman McIver is being unjustly persecuted in connection with an incident that led to the arrest of Mayor Ras Baraka on May 9th by armed ICE agents at Delaney Hall, an ICE detention facility in Newark,” Hamm said.

“When the incident occurred she was there doing her job, conducting an oversight visit which she has the authority to do as a congressional representative,” he said.

Congresswoman McIver has been indicted on three counts of assault, resisting, and interfering with federal officials. If convicted she could face up to 17 years in prison.

“POP believes that Congresswoman McIver is innocent. She should not have been charged,” he said.

“McIver is not the one at fault. The fault lies with the ICE agents who precipitated the incident. They escalated the event, overreacting with excessive force in a reckless, abusive, and totally unprofessional manner,” Hamm said.

“ICE is out of control. It is operating more like a terrorist group than a law enforcement organization. Its masked agents are literally disappearing American citizens and innocent people off of our streets,” he said.

“POP believes that the congresswoman has been targeted and is the victim of a campaign of fear and intimidation by the Trump administration. They are trying to make an example out of her in order to silence criticism of the administration’s illegal and unconstitutional policies,” he said.

The post office and courts building is located on Franklin Street between Federal Square and Mulberry Street in downtown Newark. The building is across the street from the Newark Police Station at 22 Franklin St.
