On Fri. September 15, 2023, thousands of UAW members and their supporters marched through downtown Detroit outside the Annual International Auto Show in solidarity with the recently called strike against Stellantis, General Motors and Ford.

There is widespread support for the strike along with other labor actions which have taken place over the last several months including the SAG-AFTRA work stoppage against Hollywood; the victory by the Teamsters against UPS as well as the GEO strike at the University of Michigan which was won by the graduate employees.

UAW workers for Blue Cross, Blue Shield are also striking and had representation at the march through downtown. UAW International President Shawn Fain quoted Malcolm X in his speech to the rally and declared that they will fight “by any means necessary” to win what rightfully belongs to the working class.

Only three factories have walked out so far but other plant workers could be called to walk off the jobs in this tactic called “Stand Up Strike.”

Marchers chanted in favor of eliminating tiers and for the restoration of defined pensions for new workers.
